Background
It all started with Piante
Mati in the early 20th
century,
offering technical services for garden projects.
Twenty years later, a
fully equipped technical office was operating, elaborating ideas for carrying
out garden exhibits and green areas, often prized for originality and innovation.
After the Second World War, the reconstruction was taking place in Italy. Expertise
for the recovery of plants, trees and parks were requested to replace the ones
lost in the war; the demand for technical consultation required specialized landscapers. Piante
Mati, in the period before the war, carried out many different exhibition and
realization of gardens, have had qualified member of staff able to give good
advise on the type of plants and trees to utilize in the new garden layouts.
Herewith started a new branch within the administration building, an office exclusively
dedicated for new clients, able to advise on special requests, for the purchase
of new plants and trees and the placements in their gardens.
During the years of the Italian
economical boom, the garden acquired a luxury and exclusive status for
the upper class, and played a valuable role for new and refurbished private
residences. During those years, the newly established technical office
received requests from the whole country, extended also to Switzerland and
France.
Large International exhibition starts promoting ‘flower nurseries’, ‘ Piante
Mati’ distinguishes themselves with numerous multifaceted prizes.
Subsequently to these initiatives, the demand for the innovative garden designs receives large consensus.

During the seventies, the garden acquires an exotic and informal flow in contrast
with the rigid and classical Italian style. New experimental typologies of
plants becomes quite original.
The eighties, is a period in which new fashion for large garden is re-discovered. After
years of experimental free flow gardens, slowly, new requests for the classical
geometric ‘italian garden’ is starting up again. New public large
projects are undertaken: amongst them ‘Rusconi editore’;
'Trans Word Film' in Rome; 'Consorzio Cuoiodepur' in S.Croce (FI). The participation
to International Garden Show in Amsterdam, will earn, to the Italian representation,
a first prize to share with Japan.
During the nineties, the garden projects are being computerized,
in order to facilitate the elaboration of data and give a better visual presentation. During
these years, amongst other projects, Piante
Mati will be asked to design the
internal gardens of Museo dell'Accademia di Firenze, for the
garden around the monument dedicated to Falcone and Borsellino in
Amelia, for the modern Galoppatoio St. Patrignano, for the area of
C.E.S.P.V.I. Pistoia. In collaboration with renown architects such as Peter
Curzon and Fernando Caruncho,
Piante Mati is asked
to design the gardens of Giorgio
Armani head office in
Milano, and a large private garden in Madrid.
In February 2000 Piante
Mati is extended with a
new ‘Studio
Mati’, forming two separate entities.
Studio Mati is offering a complete range of garden services; innovative design ideas, rendering projects, technical advises, estimation of costs and promotion for green culture as a whole. In the mean time, the continuous collaboration with other companies operating in similar activities required a comprehensive service in the garden sector, such as irrigation, lighting and maintenance, hence the birth of Gruppo Mati. Further to landscape design we offer a complete supporting service (irrigation and lighting layouts), for garden and planting maintenance.
